N,N-Diisopropylethylamine

C8H19N · CAS 7087-68-5

Organic synthesis, dyes

Known in laboratory practice as Hünig's base: the bulky isopropyl groups all but close off the nitrogen, so the reagent removes a proton without entering nucleophilic substitution itself. That makes it a standard auxiliary base in fine organic synthesis and in dye production. Its acute toxicity is the lowest among the amines in this section: LD50 1480 mg/kg; exposure limit 50 mg/m³ (ACGIH). The material is still combustible and irritant - flammable liquid 3, skin irritation 2, eye irritation 2A, STOT SE 3.
