Triethylamine
C6H15N · CAS 121-44-8
Catalysts, surfactants, pharmaceutical synthesis
A tertiary amine: with no hydrogen left on the nitrogen, in acylation and sulfonylation it acts not as a reagent but as the base that binds the hydrogen chloride released. That explains its place in pharmaceutical synthesis and in the production of surfactants and catalysts. GHS: flammable liquid 3, skin irritation 2, eye irritation 2A, STOT SE 3, a combustible liquid that irritates the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. LD50 460 mg/kg, exposure limit 100 mg/m³; the batch documents are issued by the manufacturer.
